Start Talking. Keep Talking. Stay Connected.

A safer digital life begins with calm, curious conversations that help children tell you what they enjoy, what worries them, and when they need support.

August 27, 2026 · 4-minute guide

Begin before there is a problem

Talking about a child’s digital life does not need to feel like an interrogation. Begin with curiosity: ask what they enjoy, listen to how they use technology, and make room for both its benefits and its risks.

The goal is not to catch a child doing something wrong. It is to build the kind of trust that makes it easier for them to come to you when something feels confusing, uncomfortable, or unsafe.

Five questions you can ask today

  • What do you enjoy most about this app?
  • What do you wish adults understood about it?
  • Have you ever seen something online that made you uncomfortable?
  • Does anything you see online ever make you feel worse about yourself?
  • What do you think is a healthy amount of screen time?

Check in, rather than checking up

Digital safety is not a one-time talk. Apps, friendships, interests, and risks change as children grow, so return to the conversation without waiting for a crisis.

Ask about new apps, AI tools, online friendships, privacy, and how technology makes them feel. A calm check-in communicates support; surveillance and threats can make honest disclosure harder.

Learn together

Parents do not need to know everything before beginning. Children can explain the spaces they use, while adults can bring perspective about privacy, persuasive design, relationships, and safety.

Ask one question today. Listen without rushing to solve it. Then keep the conversation going.

Keep learning. Keep talking. Move forward together.
